GC Septa

GC septa from Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) are used in gas chromatography (GC), a group of techniques for separating and analyzing volatile compounds. In GC systems, a sample is injected through a rubber septum into a heated vaporization chamber. A carrier gas transports the sample into the GC column. A mass spectrometer (MS) or other detector at the end of the column measures components in the compound.  

In syringe injection systems, high-quality GC septa are critical. These GC accessories need to introduce the sample without leakage and withstand the high-temperatures of laboratory ovens. If a GC septum decomposes under these conditions, septum bleed can cause baseline disruption and ghost peaks in the GC chromatogram. GC septa include both disc-shaped products and Shimadzu plugs. 

GC septa from SSP are precision-molded from ultra-low bleed silicone rubber. These laboratory septa protect the purity of your samples and help maintain the pressure of carrier gases such as nitrogen, argon, hydrogen, or helium. GC septa also support split injections for packed columns and split-less injections for capillary columns. To ensure purity, GC septa are packaged in glass jars in different amounts. 

In gas chromatography, packed columns are made of glass or metal tubing that’s packed with diatomaceous earth or another solid support. These GC columns require larger-diameter septa than capillary or open tubular columns, which are narrower. Wall-coated open tubular (WCOT) columns are made of glass, metal, or plastic and may be coated with fused silica.
